Katherine grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin where she began skating at age three. Individually, she has passed her Senior moves in the field, Pre-Gold ice dance, and Juvenile Freeskate. She began synchronized skating at age 7 skating for the KICKS and the Fond Du Lac Blades. During her time with the Blades, her team earned two sectional gold medals, a national bronze, and a national gold.
Katherine then went on to skate for Colorado State University as part of the intercollegiate skating team. She served the team in a variety of leadership roles during her four years. The team qualified for nationals for the first time ever during her senior year. After earning her bachelor's degree in Health and Exercise Science, Katherine continued to support intercollegiate figure skating by serving on the US Figure Skating Intercollegiate Skating committee. Katherine also has a Master's Degree in Kinesiology, is personal training certified, and is a certified US Figure Skating Coach.
After grad school, Katherine lived in Laramie, Wyoming where she was the president and head coach for the Laramie Figure Skating Club. She was also the head coach and advisor for the University of Wyoming Figure Skating Club. After moving to Duluth in 2021, Katherine is excited to continue her involvement with collegiate skating at UMD!
Angie Lien
Angie has been coaching figure skating for 24 years, and enjoy coaching the recreational skater as much as the competitive skater. She is a native of the Duluth/Superior area. Angie grew up skating at the Duluth FSC and is an Alumna of UMD - Class of 2006. She earned her BAS in Exercise and Sport Science with minors in Psychology and Spanish.
Before joining the UMD Figure Skating coaching staff, Angie competed Nationally and Internationally before choosing to perform in professional shows - Royal Caribbean International/Willy Betak productions (2 ships) and Feld Entertainment's Disney On Ice for 8.5 years as a principal skater. Her favorite part of coaching is passing on her passion in life - skating. Angie is a USFS double gold medalist (Moves in the Field & Freeskate) and has passed her 6th figure test. Angie is excited for this season!
